"...once our eyes are opened, we can't pretend we don't know what to do. God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act."

Choosing To Find the Good

I had just returned from two schools where I'd delivered the kids, a bass guitar and a school project when the phone rang.  A forgotten assignment and trumpet lay near the door, could I please bring them?  Feelings of frustration started to rise, the many demands and arguments from the past days filling my memory, but as I listened to the little voice on the line, I realized we had a lot to celebrate this morning.  We had gotten out of the house on time, we had not had any lying, no forgetting the steps we needed to take to get ready, no demanding in angry voices, no noticeable bad choices and things had been quite peaceful unlike many mornings recently.  The sun was shining in the windows as I looked over and saw the forgotten items.  I remembered this same child sitting and trying to remember exactly how the digestive track worked as he prepared for what he was going to present in front of his class. His excitement and nervousness evident yet controlled enough to think without interrupting himself.  I silently smiled and told my son that yes, I would come and bring his instrument and papers.

I drove to the school in the sunshine.  I found myself smiling as I walked into the office and announced to the secretaries that I brought the aftermath of a successful morning at home.  These items were forgotten, but they served as a reminder that we have come so far.  Most mornings are a struggle of wills and grouchiness and when we are stuck in that, it is hard to see the progress. And so, I chose to celebrate that even though it was an inconvenience, other things had gone well this morning. I chose to see the good and found joy in this moment, which may seem small to you, but makes me feel pretty happy about.
